Grace Condon, a 2022 graduate of Pelham Memorial High School, was awarded a $12,000 scholarship by the Rotary Club of the Pelhams in June. She plans to attend SUNY Binghamton and enroll in a pre-med program.Ms. Condon was recognized for her academic achievement and community service.Her academic achievement merited her membership in the National Honor Society as well as the Science, English, Math, and Social Studies honor societies. She also won the BASF Expanding Knowledge in Science Award (Neuroscience) at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair.Her community service earned her the Girl Scout Gold Award (equivalent to the Boy Scout Eagle Scout). Like her science research project, the Girl Scout project focused on neurodegenerative diseases as she created more than 50 "sensory blankets" to distribute to nursing homes. These “sensory blankets” help relieve movement in the hands of the patients through attachments on the blankets of buttons zippers, buckles, etc.Ms. Condon’s volunteer activities included work at a soup kitchen and midnight runs. She was a member of several student clubs including Habitat for Humanity Club, Environmental Club, Latin Club and The Pel Mel student newspaper.Rotary Club of the Pelhams raises funds for its annual scholarship through its members and a letter mailed to community members. "Our winner will also represent an unbroken series of scholarship gifts to Pelham students which will now aggregate $272,000.”Added Ellis Moore Jr., a member of the Scholarship Committee: "Our Rotary Club keeps in touch with Scholarship winners. It is our joy to welcome them to our meetings, bid those graduating from college fond, but hesitant, farewells, and share what we can of their travels and escapades in their college years.
